On-line Monitoring of Desalters

With its experience obtained in downstream applications, AppliTek has a selection of complementary analytical solutions for monitoring and controlling reliably the desalting process: • n-line analysis of salt in crude oil • Oil/ water interface control Crude oil desalters carry the important task to remove inorganic salts, water and sediment from the oil feedstock. Without these, chlorides generated would cause severe corrosion of pipe walls, heat exchanger tubes and shell, and other carbon steel components in which they come in contact during processing. The salts are typically removed by creating a water/ oil emulsion. The effectiveness of the salt removal process depends on controlling the emulsion layer in the desalter and/ or analyzing on-line the salt levels. Lengthy maintenance intervals ( typically x years) and the necessity for robust and reliable materials to withstand the harsh environment of desalting systems require that any analyzer system and components used for monitoring the desalter environment must be capable of continuous operation for a period of time.
